Channel Letters vs. Illuminated Cabinets

Channel letters and illuminated cabinets both create strong nighttime visibility, but they differ significantly in appearance, construction, maintenance, flexibility, and cost. This practical comparison helps business owners understand when individually fabricated letters deliver the strongest storefront identity, when a cabinet is the smarter choice for shared or frequently updated signage, and which option best fits the building, lease requirements, brand standards, and long-term service plan.

Channel letters are individually fabricated shapes mounted directly to the building. They read as architecture, they photograph well at night, and they let a brand keep its exact letterforms.

Illuminated cabinets put the graphics on a translucent face inside a single frame. They cost less per square foot, are easier to service, and are often required by landlords for multi-tenant panels.

Our general guidance: if the storefront is your primary identity and the elevation can carry the wiring, build letters. If the sign lives on a shared pylon or needs frequent tenant changes, build a cabinet with a replaceable face.
